“Welcome” and “Please come again” are repeated ad nauseam. With its annoying customers, obnoxious boss and deadly monotony, the supermarket where Sakai spends his hours grinding away bears a distinct resemblance to Dante’s hell. When increasingly strange things begin to happen and the staff is decimated by a series of extremely bloody deaths, the young salesman is determined to put an end to the horror and fights back.
Like Kevin Smith’s CLERKS—but from Japan and with splatter scenes: Yusuke Iwasaki’s feature debut, whose director is himself the son of a shopkeeper, won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlinale and offers a dark yet dryly humorous look at the abysses of a dehumanized society. With an atmosphere reminiscent of nightmares like EXIT 8 and BACKROOMS, it delivers a clear message: consumption can be deadly.
